Oatmeal is the basis of a healthy breakfast. But not only your digestion, your immune system and your muscles can benefit from the superfood.
You don’t even have to eat oatmeal to do your body good.
With the external application in the form of oatmeal baths, you care for and protect your skin.
Oatmeal is also beneficial for external health
Oat flakes act as natural emollients on the skin. So you can protect them from moisture and fat loss as they strengthen the skin barrier. But not only the healthy fats, but also the vitamins in oats benefit your skin.
Vitamin E, for example, can protect the skin from free radicals. These occur in UV rays and attack the lipid layer of the skin. A recent study was able to confirm the positive effects of oatmeal on the skin.
Quick relief the natural way
A bath in oatmeal can therefore provide immediate relief for superficial skin irritations and feelings of tension caused by dryness.
But even chronic skin diseases can – in consultation with the dermatologist – be treated with oatmeal baths.
Ailments such as redness, acne, sunburn, insect bites or dry skin areas can be alleviated after the first application. Because the bath provides moisture and works against itching. Taking an oatmeal bath two to three times a week can preventively protect the skin from dryness and other skin ailments over the long term.
You can even treat sunburn with up to two baths a day. However, you should only soothe your skin with an oatmeal bath if it has not yet blistered.
Oatmeal baths can also relieve the symptoms of chronic skin diseases such as neurodermatitis, but you have to be more patient here.
The first application does not help directly. You should therefore – in consultation with your treating dermatologist – take oatmeal baths once a day over a longer period of time.
For the application of oatmeal baths
So that your oatmeal bath can develop its positive effect, you should pay attention to a few things when using it.
Dosage of oat flakes in case of irritation:
You can treat general dryness and temporary skin problems or sunburn with commercially available oat flakes from the supermarket.
To do this, grind 500 grams of oat flakes finely and add the powder to warm bath water, where it can dissolve well.
Colloidal oats for atopic dermatitis:
For skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, instead of normal oat flakes, you should use colloidal oats, which are specially produced for the production of natural cosmetics. This is particularly finely ground. You can buy colloidal oats from health food stores or order them online. Add 400 grams of this to the bath water.
Length of bathing time:
Idling for hours in the bath water until it gets cold or you don’t feel like it anymore does not make sense. Skin irritation may become more bearable for the moment in the bathroom, but a long bath will soften the already damaged skin, but this is counterproductive.
After taking your bath, lie down in the oatmeal water for only 15 minutes and then take a quick shower under running, fresh water.
hot showers and baths are bad for the skin’s fat barrier – this much should be known. Therefore, make sure that your bath water and the shower afterwards are only lukewarm when you take the oatmeal bath.
Important: check compatibility beforehand
In the case of allergies and intolerances, an oatmeal bath can have negative consequences. You should therefore test the tolerance beforehand.
This is particularly advisable for children. To do this, simply apply a little ground oat flakes to the moistened inside of the wrist and let it work for 15 minutes. Then rinse off and wait an hour to see how the skin reacts.
People who are gluten intolerant should generally not take an oatmeal bath. The oat flakes may have been contaminated with other cereals containing gluten during harvest, cultivation, processing or storage.
