Whether counting sleep or drinking warm milk with honey. There are many rituals that are supposed to help with sleep problems. Not every method is helpful here. We’ll show you which tips you can use to fall asleep faster and what the experts recommend for a restful sleep.
Resting the body: This is one of the keys to getting good sleep. For this reason, experts often recommend picking up a book before going to bed instead of staring into your smartphone.
Many people follow this tip and seem to benefit from it. This is suggested by an Ipsos survey. When asked what helps them to fall asleep, a quarter (25 percent) said: reading. 18 percent have had good experiences with foregoing beverages containing caffeine.
A full stomach doesn’t like to sleep
A similar number (16 percent) fall asleep better with music. Around one in seven (14 percent) avoid looking at a screen – be it a smartphone or television – before falling asleep, thus also following common sleep medicine recommendations. If your eyes pick up too much blue light from displays late at night, it can make you more tired.
13 percent of those surveyed seem to be aware that a full stomach can also prevent good sleep: They state that they do not eat anything after 8 p.m.
The disadvantages of the bedtime drink
12 percent swear that a glass of beer or wine will help them fall asleep. There may be something to that. But there is a downside: the nightly fluctuations in alcohol levels could mean that you do not recover properly and wake up tired in the morning.
In addition, alcohol increases the urge to urinate. With the result that you might fall asleep easily, but wake up again at night because you have to go to the toilet.
A fifth (21 percent) don’t have a specific routine that helps them fall asleep. And 17 percent apparently don’t need that either. They said, “I don’t need a sleep aid.”
On behalf of Headspace, Ipsos surveyed 1,082 people between the ages of 16 and 75 online.
