Pumpkin puree as the basis of many recipes: two preparation methods

Depending on what you need the pumpkin puree for, there are different preparation methods: in the oven or in a saucepan.

The preparation in the oven is ideal for hearty recipes, as this creates delicious roasted aromas. These are particularly good in hearty dishes.

Sweet dishes such as pumpkin pie or pumpkin pancakes are best made with pumpkin puree prepared in a saucepan. No roasted aromas develop here. The sweet notes of the pumpkin, therefore, stand out more clearly. This way you can use less sugar or other sweeteners when baking. Similar to applesauce, pumpkin puree can also act as an egg substitute in baking recipes.

Method 1: Prepare pumpkin puree in the oven

To prepare pumpkin puree in the oven, you only need one ingredient: a table pumpkin. And the preparation is just as simple.

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees with top/bottom heat or 180 degrees with convection.

Now divide the washed pumpkin, remove the seeds and cut it into small boats.

The pumpkin has to bake in the oven for about 35 minutes until it is nice and soft.

Let the pumpkin boats cool down briefly before processing them. Then remove the pumpkin flesh from the shell. With a Hokkaido pumpkin, the skin can be left on and eaten with it.

The pumpkin flesh is now pureed with the help of a hand blender or mixer until a fine puree is created.

Now pour the puree into glasses, freeze a few portions or process the puree directly.

Method 2: Prepare pumpkin puree in a saucepan

To make a pumpkin in a saucepan, you also only need a pumpkin and a little water.

Split the pumpkin, remove the seeds and the skin (except for Hokkaido) and cut the pumpkin into small pieces. The smaller the pieces, the faster the preparation.

Put the pumpkin cubes in a saucepan and pour enough water on them to cover the pumpkin completely.

Let the vegetables simmer over medium heat. Stir every now and then and add some water if necessary.

After about 15 to 20 minutes, the pumpkin should be soft. Take the pan off the heat and use a potato mash or fork to mash the soft pieces of pumpkin.
