These Foods Are Supposed To Protect The Lungs

Can you support the lungs with the right nutrition? “Yes,” says science. There are ingredients that can keep our lungs healthy and even heal them.

The bad news first: Parsley or other home remedies will not cure lung cancer or pneumonia. Conventional medicine alone offers hope here. But if you eat right, you may be able to prevent it from happening in the first place. Scientists have found that certain foods and their ingredients help prevent lung diseases or promote their regeneration. If you include the following foods in your diet, you have a good chance of maintaining your lung health or supporting the healing process.

Parsley is often underestimated, perhaps precisely because it is not one of the “exotic” culinary herbs. However, only very few plants can absorb it with their healing powers. Parsley revitalizes, gives new energy and has a soothing effect on menstrual cramps. With its dehydrating effect, it ensures that the urinary tract remains healthy and that no kidney stones can accumulate.

Above all, however, parsley with its essential oils should render toxic substances harmless, which can lead to cancer. This also applies to toxins in cigarette smoke, which makes parsley suitable for preventing lung cancer. Antioxidants in the plants also prevent cells in the lung tissue from dividing uncontrollably – which is also effective against lung cancer. Experiments with rats carried out in China confirmed this again in 2017.

Garlic enjoys an excellent reputation as part of Mediterranean cuisine. The contained allicin has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria and thus counteract dangerous ulcers in the stomach and respiratory organs. This was confirmed by a study by the University of Ghent, which was published by in 2014 and financed with British research funds.

Broccoli has a revitalizing effect

The secondary plant substance sulforaphane, which is abundant in broccoli, activates a gene (NRF2) in the human body that protects cells from toxic substances and thus prevents cancer. This was confirmed experimentally by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine years ago. Again, it is primarily about lung cancer, because smokers have a greatly increased risk of developing it. With them, the effect of this gene is inhibited – which brings broccoli back to life. The silver bullet: quit smoking and enjoy broccoli, which, by the way, has just been briefly blanched and then seared with garlic and chili is a culinary delicacy.

Tomatoes and apples: The combination for healthy lungs

An apple a day and you no longer need a doctor is an old saying. At Johns Hopkins University, one completely disagrees with this, but the direction is correct: In 2017, the positive effect of two tomatoes and one apple per day was proven here, especially for lung health. In this combination, the same effect can be achieved as with broccoli.

Water, the elixir of life

When the lungs consist of 80 percent water – dehydrate, germs and other pathogens have an easy time of it. A good water supply ensures protection here. However, you shouldn’t overdo it, because increased vascular pressure also causes problems for the lungs. However, this only occurs if you drink more than three liters of water a day.
